Equinix Commits $140M to Decentralize Nigeria’s Digital Backbone
Equinix, the global digital infrastructure powerhouse, is set to invest $140 million over the next two years to bolster Southern Nigeria’s digital landscape. This strategic move includes constructing a new data center in Port Harcourt and expanding its third Lagos-based facility, LG3.
The upcoming Port Harcourt data center, PR1, is poised to become a pivotal landing point for Meta’s 2Africa submarine cable, significantly enhancing bandwidth capacity in the region. This development aims to reduce the current over-reliance on Lagos, where approximately 70% of Nigeria’s subsea cable landings and data infrastructure are concentrated.
This initiative follows Equinix’s 2022 acquisition of MainOne for $320 million, marking its commitment to expanding digital infrastructure across Nigeria. By decentralizing internet capacity, Equinix is addressing the digital divide and paving the way for enhanced connectivity and economic growth in Southern Nigeria.
Why founders should care: For startups and tech enterprises, this investment translates to improved internet reliability, reduced latency, and greater access to cloud services. It’s a significant step toward leveling the digital playing field across Nigeria.
Stitch Raises $50M to Scale Payment Infrastructure Across Africa
Stitch, a South African fintech startup simplifying payments for businesses, just closed a $50 million Series B round — bringing their total raise to $107 million since launch. Backed by big names like PayPal Ventures, Flourish, and Ribbit Capital, this fresh capital will help Stitch scale its in-person and online payment solutions across the continent.
They’re not slowing down: Stitch is moving into the acquiring space, pushing its new checkout product “Express” for e-commerce platforms, and deepening its reach into South Africa’s enterprise scene with clients like MTN, Takealot, and Standard Bank.
Why founders should care: If you’re building anything that touches payments, Stitch is fast becoming one of the key infrastructure players to watch — or potentially partner with.
